Tweet Cheap Android Phones - Low costdevices
Android phones are gaining in
popularity globally. Its popularity is
largely due to its adoption by most
mobile phones manufacturers as their
platform of choice. Some of the
reasons why Android seems popular
to phones manufacturers include that
it is open with little restrictions giving
OEMs the liberty to be creative and
differentiate their devices. Another is
that the Android OS is free and
designed to provide a great user
experience. However, despite being
free the hardware required to run the
Android OS is quite expensive. That is
why Android devices seem expensive.
However, that is likely to change
sooner than later as phones
manufacturers begin to target price
sensitive consumers with cheaper
Android phones. Over the past few
months a number of budget Android
phones have been announced and
more are likely to join them in the
coming months.
Latest Android OS requires powerful
hardware to run that is why most of
the latest Android smart phones
feature at least 1GHz processor and
512MB RAM with premium models
boasting of 1GHz dual-core processor.
High-end Android phones also offer
large displays ranging from 4.0-inch
to 4.3-inch, all these accounts for the
high prices of Android phones. For
Android phones to be cheaper, phones
manufacturers need to make Android
phones with less powerful hardware,
smaller displays, and innovate on
older Android OS versions to offer
reasonable user experience. Some
manufacturers are beginning to do
this and many more are bound to join
them.
Here are some cheap Android phones
LG GT540 Optimus
LG GT540 is the second
Android phone from LG.
It now features Android
2.1 and has a 600MHz
processor. It is an entry
level Android phone
targeted at price sensitive
users. LG GT540 Optimus
features a 3.0-inch
touchscreen and a 3MP camera.
GT540 Optimus does well in
connectivity supporting GSM/GPRS/
EDGE, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and
USB. This budget Android phone is
currently available globally and sells
for around N46,000 in Nigeria.

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570
Samsung Galaxy Mini
S5570 is the cheapest
of four new low cost
Android phones from
Samsung. It offers a
more advanced
Android OS than the
LG GT540 Optimus at
around the same
price, possibly
cheaper. It is a feature-rich Android
phone targeted at users looking for
value for money. Samsung Galaxy
Mini features Android 2.2.1 (Froyo),
384MB RAM, and a 600MHz
processor. Other features of the
Galaxy Mini include 3.2-inch
touchscreen, 3MP camera, GSM/GPRS/
EDGE, high speed internet HSDPA,
Bluetooth, and USB. Samsung was
also thoughtful to add an FM Radio in
this device, something that most
Android phones lack and one that is
crucial for phones targeted at
emerging markets. Galaxy Mini is
already available in some countries
and may soon be available in Nigeria.
Based on its price in other countries,
we can predict a price of between
N42,000 and N50,000.

Samsung Galaxy Fit S5670
Samsung Galaxy Fit
S5670 is similar in
feature to Galaxy Mini,
but offers some
improvements. First it
has a slightly larger
3.31-inch touchscreen.
Another important
distinction is the
camera, Galaxy Fit has
a 5MP camera. Like the Galaxy Mini,
Samsung Galaxy Fit features Android
2.2.1 (Froyo), FM Radio, GSM/GPRS/
EDGE, high speed internet HSDPA,
Wi-Fi b/g/n, and 600MHz processor.
This Android phone will cost a bit
more than the Galaxy Mini.

Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660
Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 comes
with a more powerful processor. The
800MHz processor means the Gio is
likely to offer better performance
than the Galaxy Mini and Fit. Galaxy
Gio features Android 2.2 but since it
offers a more powerful processor,
users may get an Android 2.3 upgrade
in future. Other features of this
Android phone include 3.2-inch
touchscreen, 3.15MP camera with
LED flash, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, high
speed internet HSDPA, Bluetooth, Wi-

ZTE Racer
ZTE Racer is a budget
Android smart phone. It
features a 2.8-inches
touchscreen and a 3.15-
inch camera. It is an
entry level Android
phone which was
successful. Its success
made ZTE to release a
couple of other Android phones.
However, ZTE seems to be a less
known brand in Nigeria. With the
price tag of this Android phone in
other countries, it should cost around
or less than N25,000 in Nigeria. Other
features of ZTE Racer include 600MHz
processor, 256MB RAM, Android 2.1,
GSM/GPRS/EDGE, high speed internet
HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth, and USB.

ZTE Blade
ZTE Blade is a follow-up
of the ZTE Racer
Android phone. ZTE
Blade offers improved
performance and more
functionality. For
starters the display is
larger and more
reasonable than what
was offered on the
Racer. A 3.5-inch
touchscreen will definitely be better
than a 2.8-inch display. Although it
features the same 600MHz processor,
it adds more RAM (512MB), this
means that the included Android 2.1
will run faster and can be upgraded
to Android 2.2. An FM Radio is
another interesting addition to the
ZTE Blade. Other features of ZTE
Blade include GSM/GPRS/EDGE, high
speed internet HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g,
Bluetooth, and USB. Based on price in
other countries, this Android phone
should cost N35,000 - N42,000 in
Nigeria.

Other Cheap Android Phones:
LG GW620 - Android 1.6
Huawei U8100 - Android 2.1
So, here are some cheap Android
phones. More low cost Android
phones are likely to join them as
vendors aim for more market share.
Budget Android phones will make
Android phones more popular in
Nigeria and the rest of the emerging
market. However, for Android to
become mainstream in Nigeria smart
phone market, Android phones priced
less than or around 200 USD
(N30,000) without overly
compromising on the much talked
about Android user experience is
essential. This should be the target for
entry level Android phones.
